Understanding Your Diagnosis

How Does My Doctor Know I Have Laryngeal Cancer?

If you have symptoms of laryngeal cancer, your doctor will first ask questions about them. Next, the doctor will ask about your complete medical history and give you a physical exam. The doctor will ask questions about:

  • Your health

  • Your family medical history

  • Your habits (such as smoking)

The doctor will feel your neck to check for these physical signs.

  • Lumps

  • Swelling

  • Tenderness

After that, the doctor may order various tests. And it’s likely you will be referred to an ear, nose, and throat specialist, called an otolaryngologist. These specialists are sometimes called ENT physicians. Or you may be referred to a head and neck surgeon.
